People & Culture

At NBM Railways, we invest heavily in our people - from safety training to professional development. While we use state-of-the-art technology to help run our business, it's our dedicated people who make sure our customers have their goods delivered safely, and securely, and on time.

Here's how we do it.

Corporate Support

As part of the J.D. Irving, Limited Group of companies we've worked hard to ensure that each of the six business divisions support one another. We also have LEAN and Six Sigma integrated into all of our businesses to drive continuous improvement in safety and the operations as well as reduce waste and enhance service.

Safety Management System & Safety Culture

Safety is embedded into our corporate culture. The Safety Management System is our formal framework for integrating safety into day-to-day railway operations and includes safety goals and performance targets, risk assessments, responsibilities, rules and procedures and monitoring and evaluation. We are also inspected on a regular basis by third-party regulatory bodies.

Investment in People & Safety

At NBM Railways, people count. We attract skilled, experienced employees from all across North America. Our team consists of 275 people across our three rail businesses - all committed to value, service and safety for our customers.

To help our people maintain and grow their best-in-class skills, we provide hundreds of hours of training each year in the following areas:

  • Canadian rail operating rules
  • Hazmat, dangerous commodities
  • Fire control and prevention
  • First aid and fall arrest
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC)
  • Incident investigation
  • Watercourse alteration
  • Track inspection training
  • Skilled trade apprentices
