Building a successful track record

New Brunswick & Maine Railways (NBM Railways) is a short line railroad that consist of three railways New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR), Eastern Maine Railway (EMR) and Maine Northern Railway (MNR). 

We have direct interchange connections to three railways, Canadian National Railways (CN) in Saint John and Saint-Leonard, NB, Pan Am Railways (Pan Am) in Mattawamkeag, ME and Maine, Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ) in Brownville, ME. We operate three offices and a reload in Northern Maine and one Office and reload in Southern New Brunswick. NBM Railways maintains, owns and operates 549 miles of mainline and yard tracks in New Brunswick and Maine. 

1994 - Canadian Pacific Rail (CP) discontinued its rail operations in the Maritimes. 

1995 - New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR) was born and the wheels were set in motion to build a top-quality transportation solutions provider. 

1995 - Eastern Maine Railway Company Limited (EMR) came under NBM Railways operational control. This allowed NBM Railways to interchange with Pan Am at Mattawamkeag, ME and the MMA at Brownville Junction, ME. 

2002 - NBM Railways entered into a successful long-term partnership with CN to provide local switching and service to customers in Saint John, NB.

2011 - The State of Maine purchased 241 miles of rail in Northern Maine. NBM Railways were granted the rights to operate and maintain the rail line. The MNR stretches from Millinocket, ME to Madawaska, ME where today it connects to EMR and the CN interchange in Saint-Leonard, NB. The MNR also has trackage rights between Millinocket, ME and Brownville, ME over the MMA. 

2012 - Woodland Pulp LLC appointed NBM Railways as the operator and maintenance provider for 11 miles of railroad running between Baileyville, Maine and St. Stephen, N.B. following their successful purchase of the line from Pan Am Railways. 

2013 - NBM Railways purchased the 28 mile Van Buren Sub Division from the MMA. The line connects EMR with affiliate MNR at Madawaska, ME and CN at Saint-Leonard, NB. 

Today - NBM Railways has built a strong reputation for safety and service as it delivers economical and environmentally friendly transportation solutions to the Forestry Industry, Energy companies, the Construction and Manufacturing sectors, Consumer Products and Large projects.
